What is Qigong for Self-Healing?

Where our energy is abundant and flows freely, there is health and vitality. Where our energy is blocked or stagnant there is pain and disease. In qigong for self-healing we learn to tune into the flow of our energy so that we can be aware of how it is flowing in each part of our energy system, and we develop skills to clear blocked or stagnant energy when necessary to restore balance and health.

In this course you will learn practices to activate the flow of energy within you and to develop your awareness and sensitivity to your energy. You will then work systematically through each of the main parts of your energy system to understand their healthy function and how you can work directly with them to assess the health of the energy, clear blockages when needed, and correct issues and imbalances by restoring healthy energy flow.

You will work with:

  • Your dantiens – or oceans of energy within you that act as reservoirs for the rest of your energy system.
  • The central flow of energy through your body that when healthy and unblocked brings a constant supply of fresh energy into your system.
  • Your extraordinary meridians, which flow like ocean currents keeping your energy fresh, and bringing energy to every part of your body.
  • Your energy field which acts as both a protection and connection between yourself and the world around you.
  • Your organ meridians that flow like rivers through your body, influencing the function of your internal organs, your posture, and your emotions.
  • Directly with each of your main internal organs using energy, colour, and sound.
  • Energy points – also known as acupuncture points, to understand their structure and function so that you can activate them with qigong instead of needles.
  • The balance of yin and yang, passive and active energies within you.
  • The phases of the five elements for finetuning the energy balance and flow
  • Additional centres of energy within you that affect your psychology and outlook on life.
  • The flow of energy within your skeletal system.

By systematically working through all of your energy systems, you will gain a wholistic understanding of how your energy flow affects your health and wellbeing, and develop the skills needed to maintain healthy energy flow and restore balance when needed.

We will use a variety of moving qigong practices to activate the overall flow of our energy, and then the main methods we will use for working with the parts of our energy system are touch, energy emitted from our hands, breath, and mindful intention. These methods are very direct ways for us to connect to our energy and can be used by people with all levels of physical ability as most practices can be adapted to standing, sitting, or lying down positions as needed.

We will also look at how we can integrate our use of these qigong self-healing methods with other types of qigong practices, to further enrich our experience and understanding of them.

The practice of qigong self-healing is both simple and direct, and complex and nuanced at the same time. Each of the qigong self-healing methods will be taught in a very practical down to earth way, but there is a lot of subtlety which can only be fully grasped through experience. The interactive aspect of the course will play an important role in supporting you in understanding this nuance. The regular q&a and group practice sessions will support you, giving you the opportunity to ask any questions you have arising from your personal practice, and you will also have the opportunity to hear other participant’s experiences to give different perspectives and enrich your understanding.

What kind of health conditions is qigong self-healing good for?

All of our health comes from having sufficient healthy free flowing energy, as such qigong self-healing can be beneficial for any health condition as restoring healthy energy flow restores health.

Do I need a diagnosis to apply qigong self-healing effectively?

The basis of qigong self-healing is in understanding and working with our energy. The flow of our energy is the result of the activity of both our mind and body, and as such working with our energy can often be effective in addressing issues that are hard to define by other means. In qigong self-healing, while you will of course be aware of any physical symptoms, the primary basis for assessment and healing is awareness of the energy flow.

How does qigong self-healing compare to other types of qigong?

In qigong self-healing we focus very directly on working with our energy using touch, energy emitted from our hands, and mindful intention. This direct approach is very simple, but also requires a significant degree of awareness of your energy and understanding of it characteristics and patterns of flow, which is developed over time through practice, experience, and clear guidance. While we may use some moving qigong practices within our qigong self-healing, this type of practice plays far less of a role than it does in other types of qigong practice.

How does qigong self-healing compare to other types of energy healing?

There are many different types and schools of energy healing from different cultures, each with their own focuses, features, and merits. One of the main differences between qigong self-healing and other types of energy healing is it’s grounding in the clear and detailed understanding of our energy systems from Chinese medicine. With qigong for self-healing you will learn to be aware of and work directly with parts of your energy system such as your meridians, dantien, and energy points (also known as acupuncture points).

How can qigong self-healing lead me towards becoming a qigong healing practitioner?

To be able to use energy to heal others you must first develop the health and vitality of your own energy. You also need to develop awareness and sensitivity to the flow of living energy, its healthy patterns of flow, and how can effectively clear blocked and stagnant energy in order to restore balance. Through the practice of qigong self -healing you develop all of these foundational skills and understanding needed to prepare yourself to be able to work with the energy of others effectively.

How much time should I expect to spend on my study and practice during the course?

Qigong means skill with energy, and this skill, or ‘gong’ comes from practice over time. When you practice consistently over a period of time – with good guidance, you can develop personal experience and understanding of your vital energy. This will enrich your life, and make your teaching more authentic and valuable when you embark on your new role as a qigong instructor on completion of your training.

To develop this gong, you should be prepared to practice qigong for approximately 1.5 hours per day over the 15 weeks duration of this course, in addition to around 3 hours of reading, reviewing videos, and otherwise working on your theoretical understanding of the practices.  You can choose to divide this up in different ways. You could do a single 1.5 hour practice session each day, or you could divide it into two or more shorter practice sessions. The time you spend on theory can also be spread throughout the week, or done in a more concentrated block.

What if I can’t attend the q&a sessions?

Different timezones and schedules can make it hard to attend live online sessions regularly for people in different parts of the world. We will do our best to schedule the q&a sessions so that it is possible most people to attend them at least some of the time, but recognize that this may not be possible for all program participants for all sessions. For this reason, attendance at the q&a sessions is highly recommended – but not be compulsory. We will also record the q&a sessions so that any discussion and demonstrations that occur there can be reviewed again later by all students as needed.

What if I can’t complete the program in 15 weeks?

Sometimes life can get in the way of our best made plans, and you may need to pause your study and practice for one reason or another. This does not need to stand in the way of your completing this 200 hour qigong instructor certification program. While the program and the related q&a’s will run over 15 weeks, you will have lifetime access to all of the course materials, including recordings of the q&a’s. If during the program your training needs to be interrupted for any reason, you can pick it up again from where you left off using the recorded course materials – and you have up to one year to complete your certification tests.

Receiving your certification

At the end of the program, we do have a comprehensive testing process . The thought of doing a test can be daunting for some people, but this is done in a supportive way to ensure that your understanding and practice are sound, so you can share your new knowledge and skills with confidence as a qigong instructor.
