RPB Week Eleven – Directing Energy

Exercise: Stoke the Fire

Inhale through your nose and imagine the fresh energy from the breath filling you body centred on your dantien.  Exhale through your mouth and imagine you are blowing on your dantien as if you were blowing on a glowing coal.  With each breath as you blow on the coal the energy in your dantien grows warmer and brighter.

Repeat for ten or more breaths.

Exercise: Direct the Energy

Following on from the previous exercise, as you inhale through your nose draw fresh energy in to your dantien, as you exhale blow on the energy in the dantien making it glow stronger and brighter and send a stream of this energy down your right leg, filling your leg.  As you inhale draw the excess energy back to your dantien and as you exhale again send stream of energy down your left leg, filling it with energy.  As you inhale draw the excess energy back to your dantien, as you exhale again send the stream of energy up filling your torso and your left arm.  As you inhale draw any excess energy back to your dantien and as you exhale again send a stream of energy up through your body to fill your right arm.  As you inhale draw any excess energy back to your dantien and as you exhale again send a stream of energy up through your body to fill your head.  As you inhale draw any excess energy back down to your dantien and as you exhale again send energy from your dantien in all directions to fill your entire body.  Repeat for several breaths.

Exercise: Clearing Disrupted Qi

If you have an area of your body that is stiff, sore, injured in some way or just seems weak or dark in your mind’s eye, follow on from the previous exercises and inhale fresh energy to your dantien.  As you exhale send a stream of bright glowing energy from your dantien to this part of your body.  Flow the energy right through the affected part of your body and out into the world around you.  Repeat for ten or more breaths drawing fresh energy in with each inhalation and sending bright glowing energy in a stream through the affected part, washing it with energy and clearing any stagnant or disrupted qi out of your body and replacing it with fresh healthy energy.  Notice how this part of your body feels once you have done this.

Exercise: Creating a Ball of Energy

Following on from the previous exercises, as you inhale through your nose draw fresh energy in to your dantien.  As you exhale through your mouth raise your hands in front of your body with the palms facing each other.  Send a stream of energy from your dantien up through your body and down your arms to fill your hands with qi.  With each breath send more energy to your hands and let the energy gather here, gradually let a ball of energy form between your hands.  As you inhale draw your hands apart just slightly and as you exhale squeeze them together a little pressing against the resistance of the ball of energy.  With each breath send more energy in to the ball of energy.  You can also practice rolling the ball of energy around between your hands. 

When you are ready to finish this exercise, rather than wasting the energy, squeeze the ball smaller and smaller condensing the energy until it is about the size of a large orange, then inhale and draw your hands in to rest with your palms just below your belly button and let the energy transfer into your body at your dantien where you can store it for use in your body.

The preceding exercises are simple examples of how breathing combined with mental focus can help us to be aware of our energy and direct it within and around our body.  These simple practices will form a good foundation for further practice of qigong or other types of energy work.
