MIS Week Ten: Directing Energy (Breath)

This week we will add breath awareness and intentional directional flow of our energy to our practice.

The intentional focus of our energy flow is as follows.

Posture One: Wuji. Focus on a sense of the energy flowing healthily within your body. At its most detailed this will involve healthy movement of the energy with in all the meridians, major energy centres and energy fields as in week 2 and week 3 of this course.  For most people it is difficult to maintain awareness of all of these flows at once, but rather you are able to get a general sense of them.  A bit like looking at a whole tree and getting a sense of its shape without needing to consider every leaf and branch.  Feel your breath stimulating this flow of energy through your body.

Posture Two: Hands on Abdomen.  See if you can maintain this sense of healthy energy flow throughout your body and energy fields.  As you breathe in, gently intentionally draw energy in, up through the soles of your feet, down through the top of your head, and inwards from all directions around you through the pores of your skin and the acupuncture points all over your body.  As you breathe out circulate the energy to your hands and from the palms of your hands deep into the centre of your body, strengthening the energy activity at your core or your lower dantien.

Posture Three: Hands Together in Front. As you breathe in, gently intentionally draw healthy energy into your body from all directions to your centre, as you breathe out send the energy from your centre to the palms of your hands in front of you.

Posture Four: Hands Separate in Front.  As you breathe in, gently draw energy in through one arm to the centre of your body, as you breathe out gently send energy from the centre of your body out through your other arm. Repeat for several breaths, and then switch the direction of flow breathing in through the other arm and out through the arm you were previously breathing in through. Ideally you will maintain a sense of healthy energy flow throughout your body and energy field as in posture one as you focus on the specific flow of energy in and out through your arms in this posture and subsequent postures, but is will be more a background awareness.

Posture Five: Hands to the Sides. As you breathe in, gently draw energy in through one arm to the centre of your body, as you breathe out gently send energy from the centre of your body out through your other arm. Repeat for several breaths, and then switch the direction of flow breathing in through the other arm and out through the arm you were previously breathing in through.

Posture Six: One Hand High, the Other Hand Low.  Breathe in through the high hand to the centre of your body and out from the centre of your body to the low hand.  Change which hand is high and which is low and again breathe in through the high hand and out through the low hand.

Posture Seven: Hands Together in Front.  Same as for posture three.

Posture Eight: Hands on Abdomen. Same as for posture two.

Posture Nine: Wuji. Same as for posture one.

Finish with your practice with your usual cooldown.
